Wellesley, Richard Colley

 

(First Marquis Wellesley). Born June 20, 1760, in Dangan Castle, County Meath, Ireland; died Sept. 26, 1842, in London. British state figure.

Wellesley was the brother of the Duke of Wellington. In 1797 he became governor of Madras and governor-general of Bengal. He conducted a policy of colonial annexation. He was foreign minister of Great Britain from 1809 to 1812 and was lord lieutenant of Ireland from 1821 to 1828 and in 1833–34.
