Welles, Roger

(1862–1932) naval officer, explorer; born in Newington, Conn. A graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy (1884), he served in three Arctic explorations and wrote English-Eskimo and Eskimo-English Vocabularies (1890). He explored the Orinoco River (South America) (1891), served with distinction in the Spanish-American War, and was the director of naval intelligence during World War I.
