Werner Hartke

Hartke, Werner

 

Born March 1, 1907, in Eschwege. German (German Democratic Republic) classical philologist and historian. Member of the German Academy of Sciences in Berlin (1955).

Hartke became the head of the department of classical philology of the Humboldt University of Berlin in 1955 and was the university’s rector from 1956 to 1959. He was president of the Academy of Sciences from 1958 to 1969 and vice-president from 1968 to 1972.

Hartke’s chief works deal with the history and culture of ancient Rome; he is particularly interested in the political and ideological content of Roman literature. He has also written on the history of the German Academy of Sciences and on such figures of German science and culture as the brothers J. and W. Grimm, A. von Humboldt, and T. Mommsen. Hartke became a foreign member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in 1966.
