Established: 1947.
Location:On Long Island's south shore.
Facilities:Visitor contact station, viewing sites, hiking trails.
Activities:Boating, fishing, hiking, wildlife observation.
Special Features:The refuge contains one of the last undeveloped estuary systems remaining on Long Island and includes Carmans River, a state-designated Wild and Scenic River.
Habitats: 2,550 acres of marine seagrass beds, intertidal saltmarsh, high saltmarsh, freshwater marsh, swamps, and upland pine and oak forests.
Access: Open from dawn to dusk.
Wild life: Waterfowl, primarily black duck. Also provides habitat for owls, hawks, butterflies, mice, voles, deer, weasel, and fox.
