West Karelian Elevation
an elevation in the west of the Karelian ASSR between Lakes Segozero and Leksozero. Length, approximately 130 km; height, up to 417 m. It is composed of granite gneiss and quartzite and covered with a ruptured mantle of rudaceous moraine. The western part consists of separate domelike elevations. The central area is characterized by lengthy tall and narrow ridges (especially in the south). The east is hilly, bounded in the northeast and southwest by swamped plains. The West Karelian Elevation is covered with taiga spruce and pine forests.
