Westphalian Layer

(named after the historical region of Westphalia in the Federal Republic of Germany), continental layers of the middle section of the carboniferous system of Western Europe that have a characteristic complex of vegetable remains, largely calamites, lepidophytes, and many pteridosperms. It was described by the French geologist A. Lapparent in 1893.
