Barnard, Frederick A. P. (Augustus Porter)

(1809–89) college president; born in Sheffield, Mass. This mathematician and scientist was president of Columbia College (later University) (1864–89), which he developed into a major university, admitting women (1883; Barnard College is named for him), establishing the Teachers College and the School of Mines, and pioneering the elective system.
