The peculiar clicking and whooshing sounds made by a PEPmodem such as the Telebit Trailblazer as it tries tosynchronise with another PEP modem for their specialhigh-speed mode. This sound isn't anything like the normaltwo-tone handshake between conventional modems and isinstantly recognizable to anyone who has heard it more thanonce. It sounds, in fact, very much like whale songs. Thisnoise is also called "the moose call" or "moose tones".
