Established: 1938.
Location:North-central Alabama, along the Tennessee River and its tributaries.
Facilities:Visitor center, trails, boardwalk, viewing sites, auto tour route, historic features, boat ramp.
Activities:Boating, canoeing, fishing, hiking, biking, horseback riding (on open graveled roads), hunting, educational programs.
Special Features:Refuge supports the southernmost and Alabama’s only significant concentration of wintering Canada geese. In the fall, geese and ducks migrate to the refuge, where they rest and feed throughout the winter.
Habitats: 34,500 acres of unfarmed uplands, shoreline woodlands, open water, hardwood bottomlands, and pine plantations.
Access: Open during daylight hours.
Wild life: Ducks, geese, humminbirds, butterflies, American alligator, raccoons, and deer.
