(Ctenopharyngodon idella), a fish of the carp family. Body length, up to 122 cm; weight, up to 32 kg. The white amur is found in the basin of the Amur River and in the plains rivers of China, south to Canton. It feeds mainly on upper water plants. Its fertility is up to 1 million individual roe.

The white amur has industrial significance. In the USSR it has been acclimatized in the European part and in central Asia; it has formed natural schools in the Amu Darya and Kuban’ rivers. The fish is bred in fish farms; it is raised in ponds together with carp, significantly raising the productivity of the ponds. The young are released into rice fields to kill weeds. The white amur is widely grown in many European and Asian countries in the pond fish-farming industry, as well as for keeping irrigation canals and the cooling ponds of thermal-electric power plants free of vegetation.
