White, Tim (Timothy) Douglas

(1950– ) physical anthropologist; born in Los Angeles, Calif. A professor at the University of California: Berkeley (1970), his excavation of protohominid footprints in Tanzania (1978) led to his codiscovery (with D. C. Johanson) of "Lucy," the earliest human ancestor (Australopithecus afarensis) (1978–79).
