Whiting, John W. M.

(1908– ) sociologist, psychologist; born in Chilmark, Martha's Vineyard, Mass. Educated at Yale (B.A. 1931; Ph.D. 1938), he worked as a researcher for Yale's Institute of Human Relations from 1938–47, using anthropological and psychoanalytical perspectives to inform his work on child development and socialization. Later associated with Harvard, he also directed the Child Development Research Unit of the University of Nairobi (1966–73). He published Child Training and Personality in 1953.
