Whittlesey, Derwent

Whittlesey, Derwent (Stainthorpe)

(1890–1956) geographer; born near Rockford, Ill. He first taught at the University of Chicago (1920–28) before joining the Harvard faculty (1928–56). He contributed much to political geography and historical geography; in 1929 he introduced the term for which he was long best known, "sequent occupance." He also had a keen interest in Africa.
