whoops procedure

A UK term of art for a surgical procedure in which an inexperienced surgeon (or one inexperienced in the type of procedure on which he or she is undertaking) realises, after already beginning, that a serious error has been made in or regarding the surgery.
A classic “whoops procedure” is that in which the operator expects a banal lesion that he or she can shell out or excise with a minimal rim of normal tissue—and plans sxclusively for that—and finds a soft-tissue sarcoma in which his or her impetuosity created an error in the margins, making complete excision by the specialised surgeon more difficult while worsening the prognosis.
