In southeastern MD, north of Princess Anne; organized Aug 17, 1867 from Somerset and Worcester counties. Name Origin: For the Wicomico River, which flows through it. Possibly for a Nanticoke Indian village near its banks named wicko-mekee, possibly 'where houses are being built,' or 'pleasant place of dwelling.'
