Wilcken, Ulrich

 

Born Dec. 18, 1862, in Stettin: died Dec. 10, 1944, in Baden-Baden. German historian of antiquity; one of the founders of Greek papyrology; professor (1889).

Wilcken published, translated, classified, and studied Greek papyruses, potsherds, and ostraca. Using them as a basis, he did a number of studies on the history and the socioeconomic, political, and cultural life of Greece, Rome, Byzantium, and Arabic Egypt. Wilcken modernized the study of ancient history and was the founder of the scholarly journal Archiv fiir Papyrusforschung.
