Wilhelm Hasselmann

Born Sept. 25, 1844, in Bremen; date of death unknown. German Social Democrat; one of the leaders of the Lassallians. Participated in the activities of the General German Workers’ Association.

From 1871 to 1875, Hasselmann was the editor in chief of the Neuer Sozial-Demokrat, the organ of the Lassallians, in which he wrote articles against K. Marx and F. Engels. From 1876 to 1879 he published the newspaper Die rote Fahne, in which he sharply attacked the policies of the Social Democratic Party. After that, he openly adopted an anarchistic position. In 1880 he was expelled from the Social Democratic Party. He emigrated to the USA and left the workers’ movement.
