Wilhelm Troll
Troll, Wilhelm
Born Nov. 3, 1897, in Munich. German botanist. Member of the German Academy of Naturalists known as the Leopoldina. Brother of C. Troll.
Troll was a pupil of K. Goebel. He was a professor at the universities of Munich (1931), Halle (1932), and Mainz (1946). In 1967 he was made an honorary doctor of the University of Heidelberg. Troll’s works dealt principally with the comparative morphology of higher plants. He regarded the morphological type as the principle of structure (prototype) that lies at the basis of the multiplicity of forms. He counterposed the typological approach to the casual, or physiological, one.
