Orpen, William Newenham Montague

 

Born Nov. 27, 1878, in Stillorgan, County Dublin; died Sept. 29, 1931, in London. Irish painter.

Orpen studied at the Dublin Metropolitan School of Art from 1892 to 1896 and at the Slade School of Art in London from 1897 to 1899. He painted landscapes, interiors, genre scenes, historical pictures, and battle pieces, but he was especially known for his penetrating sociopsychological portraits. Orpen’s works are marked by realism, rich color, and free brushwork.
