(wĭ`lĭbrôrd), 658–739, English Benedictine missionary, called the Apostle to the Frisians. He was brought up at Ripon by St. WilfridWilfrid, Saint,
634–709?, English churchman, b. Northumbria, of noble parentage. He was educated at Lindisfarne and Canterbury. With Benedict Biscop he traveled to Lyons and Rome in 654; Wilfrid remained to study in each city.

 and studied further (678–90) in Ireland. From there he was sent with a few monks to Friesland to preach, under the protection of Pepin of HeristalPepin of Heristal
(Pepin II) , d. 714, mayor of the palace (680–714) of the Frankish territory of Austrasia; grandson of Pepin of Landen and father of Charles Martel.

. In 695 Willibrord went to Rome and was consecrated archbishop of the Frisians by Pope Sergius I, who gave him the name of Clement. Utrecht was established as his see; it became a center of English Christian culture on the Continent. He died at Echternach, in the monastery which he had founded (c.700). , c.675–754?, English missionary monk and martyr, called the Apostle of Germany, b. Devonshire, England. His English name was Winfrid. He was educated in the monastery of Nursling, near Winchester.
