Willis, Bailey

(1857–1949) geologist; born in Idlewild-on-Hudson, N.Y. He served the U.S. Geological Survey (1884–1916), taking leaves to explore China (1902) and Argentina (1911–15). He joined Stanford (1915), where his lectures and research on seismology earned him the sobriquets "the earthquake professor" and "Earthquake Willie." After his retirement (1922), he traveled to seismic centers of the world. His conclusion that earthquakes cannot be predicted led to his proposals for better building codes in earthquake-intensive areas.
