Wind Cave, discovered in 1881, was named for the strong air currents that blow alternately in and out of it depending on whether the atmospheric pressure is higher or lower than the air pressure inside the cave. There are 10.5 mi (16.9 km) of explored passageways. The cave's temperature remains constant at 47°F; (8°C;). Unusual calcite-crystal and boxwork formations make Wind Cave unique. The park's surface is characterized by rolling grasslands where bison, elk, deer, and pronghorn antelope can be found; several prairie dog towns are in the park. Established: Established on January 9, 1903. Wind Cave National Game Preserve established on August 10, 1912, and added to the park on June 15, 1935. Location:In southwestern South Dakota. From Rapid City, take US 79 south for 50 miles to US 18, then right onto US 385 North, which passes through Hot Springs and into the park. Also accessible via US 16 west out of Rapid City onto US 385 south. Facilities:Campground (é), picnic area, rest rooms (é), restaurant/snacks, visitor center (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail. Activities:Camping, hiking, auto touring, guided cave tours and prairie hikes. Special Features:Here in the scenic Black Hills, one of the world's longest and most complex caves is well known for its outstanding display of boxwork, an unusual cave formation composed of thin calcite fins resembling honeycombs.
