window manager

(operating system)A part of a window system which arrangeswindows on a screen. It is responsible for moving andresizing windows, and other such functions common to allapplications.

Examples from the X Window System are twm, gwm, olwm.

Software incorporated into all popular GUIs that displays a window with accompanying menus, buttons and scroll bars. It allows the windows to be relocated, overlapped, resized, minimized and maximized. There is a window manager in all graphics-based desktop operating systems, including Windows, Mac and Linux.
