windsock deformity

windsock deformity

Cardiology
A descriptive term for an aneurysm of the sinus of Valsalva, as seen by aortography, in which there is a wide base at the aortic origin and a nipple-like apex projecting into the right atrium, the usual site of rupture; the aneurysm is characterised by attenuation and separation of the aortic media within the sinus from the common fibrous junction of the aorta, the left ventricle and the aortic valve.

Paediatric surgery
A descriptive term for the characteristic balloon-like dilatation seen on a barium enema in neonates with membranous atresia of the colon, ileum or jejunum; when the deformity is colonic, the barium column reaches the membrane but is forced back by the faecal flow in the transverse colon, forming a cup-shaped or windsock-like radiolucency.

Urology
A descriptive term for the soft redundant membrane that prolapses into the bulbous urethra, as seen on voiding urethrography in the rare complete urethral obstruction (which affects boys), located in the urethra distal to the verumontanum.
