On the central northern border of IA, northwest of Mason City; established Feb 20, 1847 from Indian lands. Name Origin: For the younger (1812-72?) of two chiefs of the Winnebago tribe with the same name; he took part in the Black Hawk War. Name probably formed from Winne for Winnebago and shiek 'leader.'
