On the southeastern border of MN, east of Rochester; established Feb 23, 1854 (prior to statehood) from unorganized lands. Name Origin: For the town that became the county seat, which was named for a Dakota Indian woman active in the removal of the Winnebagos from IA to MN. Name was also popularized by H.L. Gordon's poem, "Winona" (1881)
