Winthrop, John, Jr.

(1605–76) colonial governor; born in Groton, Suffolk, England (son of John Winthrop, 1587–1649). He served as governor of Connecticut (1657–58, 1659–76) and obtained a liberal charter for Connecticut in 1662. His scientific interests—chemistry and medicine—led to his becoming a member of the Royal Society (1663).
