In west-central WV, southeast of Parkersburg; organized Jan 19, 1848 from Wood and Jackson counties. Name Origin: For William Wirt (1774-1838), who in 1807 prosecuted the case against Aaron Burr (1756-1836), and was an army officer in the War of 1812 and U.S. attorney general (1817-29)
