It occurs as white, grayish, or yellow continuous gemmiform or fibrous crystalline masses; less frequently as fine rhombic crystals. Density, 4,270-4,350 kg/m3; hardness on the mineralogical scale, 3.5-4.0. In nature witherite is formed from hot internal water; it occurs in veins, sometimes along with barite, galena, and sphalerite. On the earth’s surface witherite readily becomes secondary barite.
