Wizard II Wizard II (pop culture)The Human Torch found himself the “Prisoner of the Wizard” in his solo series in Strange Tales #102 (1962), written by Stan Lee and Larry Lieber with artist Jack Kirby. An unnamed scientist/magician grows jaded of his technological achievements and selects the path most commonly chosen by those of a megalomaniacal malaise: supervillainy. This knave known only as the Wizard traps the Torch, the youngest member of the Fantastic Four (FF), then dons a costume that simulates the flaming hero's superpowers, using them to create chaos. The Torch escapes and extinguishes the Wizard's plans, earning the villain's hatred. The non-costumed Wizard was a recurring Torch foe in Strange Tales, but in Fantastic Four #36 (1965) first donned the uniform he has worn since: a purple armored bodysuit with a jumbo, egg-shaped helmet. In this Lee/Kirby adventure, the high-tech Wizard attacked the entire FF with an FF of his own: the Frightful Four, the Wizard's superteam comprised of Paste-Pot Pete (with whom he had partnered in Strange Tales), the Sandman, and Madam Medusa (aka Medusa of the Inhumans). Since then, the Wizard has remained one of the Marvel Universe's most constant and cunning threats, tackling everyone from the Avengers to Spider-Man. His primary weapons are his anti-gravity discs, which he uses for flight; he also wields his discs against heroes, making them weightless. The Wizard's power gloves emit energy blasts that rival Iron Man's repulsor rays, and over the years he has employed everything from giant robots to nuclear bombs in his war against justice. Ron Perlman voiced the Wizard in a 1994 Fantastic Four cartoon, which inspired a Wizard action figure from manufacturer Toy Biz. |
