Wladyslaw Smolenski

Smoleński, Władysław

(pseudonym, W. Grabieński). Born Apr. 6, 1851, in Grabienice Mate; died May 7. 1926, in Warsaw. Polish historian. Member of the Polish Academy of Sciences (1918).

Smoleński graduated from Warsaw University in 1874 and was a professor there from 1919 to 1926. He was a prominent exponent of the Warsaw school of history. His most important works, which deal with the sociopolitical history and social thought of late-18th-century Poland, retain their historical significance to this day. Smoleński also wrote a popular history of Poland (Russian translation, 1910) and a survey of Polish historiography.
