Województwo

 

in Poland the largest administrative-territorial unit, equivalent to an oblast. According to the present constitution of the Polish People’s Republic, a wojewodztwo consists of powiats (districts) and those cities that are subordinate to the wojewodztwo but administered separately from the powiats. The local agency of state authority in a wojewodztwo is the wojewodztwo people’s council, which is elected for four years by citizens who have attained the age of 18. The executive and administrative agency is the presidium of the people’s council.
