WolffiaWolffiaa genus of plants of the family Lemnaceae; the genus comprises 17 species. In the USSR there is one species, Wolffia arrhira. It consists of a spherical-oval petiole 0.3 to 2.0 mm in cross section; there are no leaves or roots. The plant grows on the surface of stagnant water. Usually it reproduces by budding as frequently as twice a day; more rarely it reproduces by means of seeds. The plant contains starch (up to 65 percent), protein (up to 10 percent), fat (up to 20 percent), and vitamins. It is possible to cultivate the plant for food and fodder purposes. Wolffia
