Wollaston, John

Wollaston, John

(active 1736–70) painter; born in London, England. He emigrated to New York (1749), painted portraits, and worked for the British East India Company in Bengal (1758–67). He moved to Charlestown, S.C. (1767), then returned to London. Approximately 300 unsigned portraits are attributed to him, such as Cornelia Beekman (c. 1750–55).
