Work TimeWork Time(1) The length of a worker’s participation in socially organized labor; the time established by law or on the basis of law during which a worker is to fulfill his labor obligations. Work time is measured by the length of the workday, workweek, work month, and work year. Under capitalist conditions, work time is the object of bitter class struggle. Natural developments under socialism are a reduction in work time and an increase in free time as productive forces grow. In the USSR the state, with the participation of trade unions, establishes norms for the work time of manual and office workers. Soviet labor law envisions normal work time (41 hours a week), shortened work time, and incomplete work time (established by agreement between the worker and the administration).
