Wuhu is a commercial and distribution center for the agricultural region in the basin of the lower course of the Yangtze River. It has a large port on the river and a railroad station. Industry is represented by food processing (including rice polishing, tea processing, flour milling, and vegetable-oil extraction), cotton milling, metalworking, shipbuilding, and the manufacture of machine tools and instruments.
