A nonspecific term for a disparate group of conditions that share a common pathology of a wedge-shaped infiltrate of lipid-laden S-100-negative histiocytes/macrophages accompanied by mixed inflammatory cells, including lymphocytes, plasma cells, neutrophils and eosinophils, with sparing of the epidermis.
Examples
Fat necrosis, lipophages, xanthoma, xanthogranuloma, non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis, xanthogranulomatous necrobiosis, tumours (e.g., benign fibrous histiocytoma, giant cell tumour), verruciform xanthoma.
