xylose
xy·lose X0011000 (zī′lōs′)n. A crystalline monosaccharide, C5H10O5, that is a component of most hemicelluloses in plants. Also called wood sugar.xylose (ˈzaɪləʊz; -ləʊs) n (Elements & Compounds) a white crystalline dextrorotatory sugar found in the form of xylan in wood and straw. It is extracted by hydrolysis with acids and used in dyeing, tanning, and in foods for diabetics. Xylose A pentose sugar, referred to in the early literature as l -xylose. It is present in many woody materials. The polysaccharide xylan, which is closely associated with cellulose, consists practically entirely of d- xylose. Corncobs, cottonseed hulls, pecan shells, and straw contain considerable amounts of this sugar. This pentose sugar is also a component of the hemicelluloses and the rare disaccharide, primeverose. See Carbohydrate xylose[′zī‚lōs] (biochemistry) C5H10O5 A pentose sugar found in many woody materials; combustible, white crystals with a sweet taste; soluble in water and alcohol; melts about 148°C; used as a nonnutritive sweetener and in dyeing and tanning. Also known as wood sugar. xylose
xylose [zi´lōs] a pentose found in mucopolysaccharides of connective tissue, sometimes the urine, and vegetable gum. d-Xylose is used in a diagnostic test of intestinal absorption (see malabsorption syndrome).xy·lose (Xy, Xyl), (zī'lōs), An aldopentose, isomeric with ribose, obtained by fermentation or hydrolysis of naturally occurring carbohydrate substances, for example, in wood fiber. An important dietary component for herbivores. The d-isomer is also known as wood or beechwood sugar. Synonym(s): uridine diphosphoxylosexylose (zī′lōs′)n.
