xylulose [zi´lu-lōs] a pentose sugar occurring as d-xylulose and l-xylulose, one of the few l sugars found in nature; it is sometimes excreted in the urine (see pentosuria).xy·lu·lose (zī'lū-lōs), threo-Pentulose; a 2-ketopentose. l-Xylulose appears in the urine in cases of essential pentosuria; it is also an intermediate in the glucuronate pathway.
