XY switching system

[¦eks¦wī ′swich·iŋ ‚sis·təm] (electronics) A telephone switching system consisting of a series of flat bank and wiper switches in which the wipers move in a horizontal plane, first in one direction and then in another under the control of pulses from a subscriber's dial; the switches are stacked on frames, and are operated one after another.
