Yalom, Irvin D. (David)

(1931– ) psychiatrist, educator; born in Washington, D.C. A Boston University M.D., he taught psychiatry at Stanford's medical school (1962), where he also directed the Adult Psychiatry Clinic (1973). He was an influential proponent of the existential approach to psychotherapy. His books include The Theory and Practice of Group Psychotherapy (1970, later revised) and Existential Psychotherapy (1980).
