yer·ba ma·té (yĕr'bă mah'tā) (Ilex paraguariensis) A popular beverage in South America; infusions of this herb are alleged to have value as an analgesic, antidepressant, cathartic, and diuretic. Approved for use in Germany as a stimulant. Adverse reactions include hepatotoxicity, nervousness and irritability, neurologic disorders, and increased cancer risk with prolonged consumption.
