[′yig ‚fil·tər] (electronics) A filter consisting of an yttrium-iron-garnet crystal positioned in a magnetic field provided by a permanent magnet and a solenoid; tuning is achieved by varying the amount of direct current through the solenoid; the bias magnet serves to tune the filter to the center of the band, thus minimizing the solenoid power required to tune over wide bandwidths.
