(yōkō`so͝okä), city (1990 pop. 433,358), Kanagawa prefecture, E central Honshu, Japan. It has an important naval base (founded 1868) and shipyards. It is a major fishing and trade port. Yokosuka is also known for the tomb of William Adams, first Englishman to visit Japan.

There arewharfs for shipbuilding and ship repair, dry docks, and a navalarsenal. A gun-making plant and underground oil reservoirs arelocated there, as is a steam power plant with a capacity of 1.2million kilowatts. The city is the base of the whaling fleet.Yokosuka has an aviation research center, naval schools, and amaritime museum. It is also the site of the chief Japanese navalbase.
