In N central CA, NE of San Francisco; original county; organized Feb 18, 1850 (prior to statehood). Name Origin: For a subtribe of Patwin Indians, of Wintun linguistic stock; meaning of name unclear. Possibly a corruption of Yoloy 'place abounding with rushes,' or Yodoi a Patwin village, or for a chief named Yodo. There was also a captain of a ranch who was named Yolo.
