[ak′ses·ə·rē ‚sel] (botany) A morphologically distinct epidermal cell adjacent to, and apparently functionally associated with, guard cells on the leaves of many plants. (immunology) Any nonlymphocytic cell that helps in the induction of the immune response by presenting antigen to a helper T lymphocyte.

Binding of an antigen to a self-cell is essential for T-cell response to an antigen, as the T-cell receptor requires a self-MHC class-II molecule with a bound foreign antigen before it can respond to an antigen.
