Yrjö Elias Sirola

Sirola, Yrjö Elias

(real surname, Siren). Born Nov. 8, 1876; died Mar. 18, 1936, in Moscow. Figure in the Finnish revolutionary movement; one of the founders of the Communist Party of Finland (CPF).

Sirola was a member of the Social Democratic Party of Finland from 1903 to 1918. He served as party secretary in 1905 and 1906, and from 1909 to 1911 he was a member of the Administrative Board and cochairman of the party. During the Finnish Revolution of 1918, Sirola was a member of the Council of People’s Commissioners. After the defeat of the revolution in 1918, he became a political émigré and a member of the Central Committee of the CPF. In 1921 and 1922 and from 1928 to 1936 he was a member of the International Control Commission of the Comintern. Sirola wrote on political topics for the party and translated some of the classics of Marxism-Leninism into Finnish and Swedish. He met with V. I. Lenin several times.
