Yáñez, Enrique

Born June 17, 1908, in Mexico City. Mexican architect.

Yáñez’ early works reflect the influence of functionalism. An example is the building of the electrical workers’ trade union in Mexico City (1938–40), which was designed to meet the social and cultural needs of the workers. It constituted the first attempt in contemporary Mexican architecture at a synthesis of modern architecture and monumental painting; D. Siquieros executed murals for the building.

Yáñez sought to develop the plastic, “sculptural” expressiveness of architectural forms in his later works, such as the Medical Center of Mexico (Mexico City, 1957–61).
