Having founded (1919) the Wafd party, he became premier in 1924, but the opposition of Great Britain and the Egyptian court soon forced him to resign. The last year of his life he served as president of the Egyptian parliament.

Zaghlul Pasha, Saad

Born July 1857; died Aug. 23, 1927, in Cairo. Egyptian statesman and politician, founder and first chairman of the Wafd Party.

After graduating from the Islamic al-Azhar University, Zaghlul Pasha took part in the national liberation movement from 1879 to 1882. Between 1906 and 1912 he was first the minister of education and then minister of justice. He was the first vice-president of the Legislative Assembly (1914). In 1918 he headed the movement for total Egyptian independence. He was exiled twice, in 1919 and from 1921 to 1923. From January to November 1924 he served as prime minister and in 1926 and 1927 as chairman of the Chamber of Deputies.
