(zähādän`), city (1991 pop. 361,623), capital of Sistan and Baluchistan prov., SE Iran, near the borders with Pakistan and Afghanistan. One of Iran's poorer cities, Zahedan is a road junction and the terminus of a railroad that runs into Pakistan.Zahedan
a city in southeast Iran. Population, 42,000 (1971). Zahedan is linked by a railroad branch with the net-work of Pakistan and by highways (through Mashhad and Kerman) with Tehran and the port of Bandar Abbas on the Strait of Hormuz. The city has an airport. A vegetable oil manufacturer, a mill, and an elevator, which was built with the assistance of the USSR, are also located there. It is a commercial center for almonds and dried fruit.
